Fragrance Free Skincare, what's the big deal?
Close your eyes and imagine walking through the beauty department of Selfridges.
How does it smell? Wonderful? I BET!
It used to make me feel amazing, uplifted and ready to buy but not anymore. I’ve found out the hard way that fragrance and skin don’t like each other and extensive research shows this.
Lots of people I know have skin problems and accepting that fragrance is likely to be one of the main causes of their skin issues is hard to accept. So why do so many products contain fragrance if it’s so bad for skin?
People want their skincare and hair products to smell nice. Smell impacts consumer buying so cosmetic companies make sure their products smell great to boost their sales.
A beautiful scent can mask those products that don’t smell so great or those products that start to smell off over time due to growing bacteria.
When fragrance is added to skincare it causes a sensitizing reaction on the skin and this is true for all skin types, not just those with sensitive skin.
Although you may use fragranced products now with no obvious problems skin has a good way of hiding when it’s aggravated. The damage may not be on the surface of the skin but underneath the many layers which can cause problems over time.
As a mother of a child who developed eczema I now know that unfragranced products just make skin happy.
