Decoding Sunscreen: Understanding Ingredients and Making Informed Choices

When it comes to protecting our skin from the sun's harmful rays, sunscreen is a go-to essential. However, not all sunscreens are created equal, and understanding the ingredients they contain is crucial for making informed choices. Again this year I’m back to the drawing board researching sunscreens and hoping to find ‘the one’.

In this blog, we'll dive into the world of sunscreen ingredients, focusing specifically on those to be mindful of and avoid. Let's decode sunscreen together..

The Difference Between Mineral and Chemical Sunscreens

Sunscreen formulations generally fall into two categories: mineral sunscreens and chemical sunscreens. Mineral sunscreens contain active ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which create a physical barrier on the skin to reflect and scatter UV rays. On the other hand, chemical sunscreens use chemical compounds like oxybenzone and octinoxate to absorb and convert UV radiation into heat.

Understanding the distinction can help you choose the type that aligns with your preferences and needs, and those of your family.

Ingredients to Avoid in Sunscreens

  • Oxybenzone: This chemical sunscreen ingredient has raised concerns due to potential hormone disruption and allergic reactions. It's advisable to opt for oxybenzone-free sunscreen.

  • Octinoxate: Another chemical sunscreen ingredient associated with hormone disruption, choosing sunscreens without octinoxate can be a safer choice.

  • Retinyl Palmitate: This form of vitamin A, often added for its antioxidant properties, has some evidence suggesting increased skin sensitivity and potential damage when exposed to sunlight.

  • Fragrances: Added fragrances can cause skin irritation and allergies. Opting for fragrance-free sunscreens minimises the risk of skin sensitivities.

Considering Nanoparticles

Certain mineral-based sunscreens may contain nanoparticles of zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. While generally considered safe, concerns have been raised about potential skin penetration and toxicity. If you prefer to avoid nanoparticles, look for sunscreens with non-nano mineral ingredients.

Expecting Mamas, Breastfeeding Mothers, Babies, and Children

When it comes to sun care for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, babies, and children, choosing the right sunscreen is essential. We recommend you opt for mineral-based, fragrance-free, and hypoallergenic formulations with broad-spectrum protection and high SPF. Dermatologist and pediatrician approved provide an added level of confidence. By prioritising sun safety, we can enjoy the outdoors while protecting the delicate skin of our loved ones.

Making Informed Choices

Choosing the right sunscreen goes beyond sun protection—it's about prioritising the health and safety of our skin. By understanding sunscreen ingredients and being mindful of potential risks, we can make informed choices that align with our values and preferences.

When selecting a sunscreen, read product labels carefully and research the ingredients. Consider your specific skin sensitivities, preferences, and environmental concerns, such as the impact on coral reefs.

I am yet to find a family sunscreen that ticks all the boxes. This summer we are going to try Organii SPF50 Broad Spectrum Mineral Sun Milk and Green People’s Organic Children by Green People Scent-Free Sunscreen SPF30. Fingers crossed!

If you have questions or uncertainties, consulting with your healthcare professional can provide further guidance.

Have a great week.
